Indie film maker Jennifer Valdes is truly awesome for sending me a copy of her independent horror film Jack 'O' Slasher (check that title people) . In short this film brings the old school slasher thrills and smacks you lovingly in the face with them. It's a fun, hilarious and gory little film that gives you a Halloween to really remember.
One thing I immediately enjoyed about this film was the opening sequence with the rhyming Halloween introduction and the opening credits. Its a fun and original way to kick things off and I dare you not to hum along to the tune!
The plot of the film sees a group of youngsters celebrating the holiday at a haunted house for tourists. As per usual in this type of film, these kids have come to the wrong place. It seems a group of local Satanists have seen fit to resurrect a creepy killer with a horrible looking yet effective pumpkin head and they want to use him to rack up anough sacrifices to call up...you guessed it...the devil.
This is cue for all manner of grisly deaths, dismemberments, gory sacrifice and stabbing by corn cob (yes indeed!). As the killings escalate its up to the few and far between survivors to try and put an end to the crazed cult and their deadly friend Jack O Slasher before Halloween becomes a permanent, and not so fun, holiday!
OK so this film inst a polished masterpiece with Oscar worthy performances but then it doesn't pretend to be. It wears its indie heart, well and truly on its sleeve and that made it very endearing to me. I say all the time a a film doesn't need to be perfect in any way shape or form (or even anywhere near perfect) to be fun and entertaining. Plus at a short and sharp 69 minutes it gets right to the goods and never outstays its welcome.
I look forward to whatever Jennifer and co come up with next, if its anywhere near as much cheesy fun as Jack O' Slasher then I am in. Maybe a sequel is in order? Hint hint.
Check out the films official Facebook HERE where you can find out how to buy your very own copy...woot!
